The F-22 will be shipped in the first years of the twenty-first century. Already, the F-22 will carry fewer missiles and its thrust-vectoring system will be less robust than originally planned. These changes will add to the cost but may expand the number of planes ordered. In any event, the Air Force hopes to use the F-22 for the next fifty years, a period long enough to make this multi-million dollar program worthwhile.
